Stories of God

Thank you for clicking through or otherwise finding your way this Stories of God website. I trust that you are here as a lover of Rainer Maria Rilke and German literature, as a learner of German, as a student of the art of translation and/or a spiritualist seeking wonder and joy in well written prose. Or, you know someone who is one, some or all of these. In any case, you alone though will determine whether the offer you are about to consider is irresistible – depending on whether you choose to buy – or not.

The Offer

Buy this translation of Rainer Maria Rilke’s Stories of God in paperback format for $19.95 – including 14 essays on the art of translation, one by each translator, as well as Rilke’s original German text, Geschichten vom lieben Gott – and receive free download access to audio readings of all fourteen translations of Rilke’s stories; plus access to unlimited updates to the audio recordings for 90 days from date of purchase.

Keep the book for 90 days – enjoy it, lend it to friends, give it as a gift. If for any reason you are not completely satisfied with any part of the book, Stories of God, for any reason, simply return the entire book in resale condition along with proof of purchase and we will refund the purchase price of the book to you, no questions ask, regardless of where you bought it.

My apologies but I cannot extend the guarantee to Kindle purchases simply because I have no idea of how you would return the Kindle copy such that you no longer had access to it. However, Kindle purchases still qualify for the same free audio recordings and updates.

Fair enough? Frankly, I don’t know of any book seller – let alone publisher – that offers such a guarantee, do you? I was told not to make such an offer, especially if the book was not purchased directly from us. However, I feel that everyone ordering this book, whether they are lovers of Rilke, spiritualists, students of the German language or students of the art of translation, will be truly happy with it in their hands or on their shelf.

I can only think of two exceptions. One, books bought as gifts that were mistakenly given – that is, the recipient of the gift really wasn’t one of those four sorts of people. I think these will be a trivial amount of returns and we will honor them. And two, bored marketers that go around testing guarantees. Even so, and especially so, we will honor the guarantee.

Our Guarantee

Now, I wrote “the entire book in resale condition” and I think that is a reasonable condition. However, if you were to have become so taken with Rilke’s stories of God and the essays on translation that you, say, will have dropped it into your bath water and simply want a replacement – we will work that out on a friendly basis.

The guarantee though is limited to lovers of books, consumers of books; it is not extended to wholesalers looking to buy wholesale from the printer and return to us at retail prices: it must be a retail proof of purchase, limit of five per customer.

One last item before we get to your ordering options. That is, you’ll need to register on the email list – in the sidebar just to the right of this text – in order to receive notification of the release of each recording and update. When you join the list, send also your receipt from Amazon or another retailer; that way you won’t have to worry about locating it if you should want to return the book. If you purchase the Stories of God directly from us, your proof of purchase will already be on file and you needn’t concern with it.

If you are concerned with SPAM, the list is averaging about one email per month, although you can expect 14 in the coming month – one notification for each audio recording; we don’t sell or rent the list to anyone. Still, if you really don’t want to join the list, that’s fine; you’ll just won’t receive the free audio recordings.
